Learning to sign with an instructor who knows the best strategies for signing with your baby will make the learning process easier. You can get instant feedback on your own signing and learn the signs correctly the first time. Your instructor also can help you learn the specific signs you need. Maybe your baby loves papaya and you need that sign. And, your instructor will show you how to use music, games and toys to stimulate the learning process. These activities will provide you with interactive and creative ways to incorporate signing into your daily life!
Finally, a class allows you to share the experience with other parents who are signing. It will be fun to hear about others experiences and share your own. You might even find a play group of parents who sign with their babies.
There are several national organizations that certify instructors to teach sign language for hearing infants. One of these organizations is the Sign2Me Presenter’s Network. The Presenters' Network is comprised of a diverse group of individuals – signing parents, educators, Speech-Language professionals, ASL Interpreters, native ASL users, medical practitioners, childcare providers, and many others – throughout the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. These individuals have been responsible for introducing and mentoring tens of thousands of parents, caregivers, and other professionals since the Presenters' Network was established in October 2000. Sign2Me maintains a database of classes across the United States and in the United Kingdom. See http://www.sign2me.com/classes.php.
NOTE: If you reside in Utah, Sign Babies teaches classes in Utah.
