Signing with your
baby is one of the very best things you and your baby can do. You are
actually teaching your toddler to talk when you teach them sign language.
Here are some
wonderful songs and books you can use when signing.
Songs to Use
with Signing
The following songs
are great to use when signing with your baby:
- Itsy Bitsy Spider
(use the signs SPIDER, UP, WATER, DOWN, RAIN, OUT, SUN, DRY)
- Old MacDonald (use
the signs for different animals)
- It's Alright to
Cry (use the signs for the different emotions expressed in the song)
Use the signs you
know and don't worry about signing every word. You and your baby will have a
great time while learning and increasing bonds.
Books to Use
with Signing
The following books
are great to use when signing. Signing when reading also increases baby's
interest in reading since baby can participate in the process
- Goodnight
Moon (teaches household objects)
- The Going
to Bed Book (teaches bedtime activities such as brushing teeth, putting on
pajamas, and so forth)
- Very Hungry Caterpillar (teaches
foods)
- Curious
George Are You Curious? (teaches emotions)
Reading books
becomes a fun and interesting experience for everyone. Choose your favorite
books and sign any of the signs you know. You can always learn more
signs.
Remember when you are teaching your child a story
in sign language that you should always speak to your child. By speaking
out loud and signing, you teach your toddler to talk sooner.
